Using Songwriting to Manage Stress: The Power of “Harmony”

In a world where social and political triggers constantly bombard us, finding effective ways to manage stress is crucial. There are many songs that are a testament to the power of music in navigating these anxieties and transforming them into hope and positivity. My latest single HARMONY is my attempt to not only do the same, but to also encourage my musical audience to do the same.

Let's dig in, shall we?

The Inspiration Behind "Harmony"

If you've been following me for a while, you'll know that songwriting for me is generally the culmination of prayer and meditation. The saying goes: "to pray is to talk to God, yet to meditate is to listen". For me, "Harmony" was a manifestation of that conversation: written in response to the personal stress I felt surrounding the upcoming election, racial, economic, and gender prejudice, the issue of bullying [whether in politics, real life, or with the clients I work with], ongoing wars, and general inequity. The lyrics reflect a desire for unity and understanding amidst the chaos:

Life is a rhythm
We play on repeat
Use every single moment
To refuse defeat
Proving our worth
In every word we say
Forgetting that the harmony
Is what makes life great

These words emphasize the importance of focusing on the collective good, rather than individual struggles, to foster a sense of community and peace.

Music as a Tool for Stress Management

Music, particularly songwriting, offers a unique way to de-stress. It helps prevent the production of cortisol in our bodies, a hormone associated with stress. Instead, engaging with music boosts serotonin and dopamine levels, chemicals that enhance our mood and promote relaxation.

When we sing the songs we write, like "Harmony," proper breathing techniques are essential. Breathing deeply and rhythmically not only improves our singing but also reduces stress, lowers blood pressure, and enhances overall health. This practice of controlled breathing can bring a sense of calm and balance to our lives.

The Benefits of Songwriting

Writing "Harmony" was a surprisingly powerful exercise for me. It helped me clear my mind and manage my stress [as per usual], but instead of just focusing on my own stress and inner turmoil, it also felt like a song for immense connection with my peers who were also struggling with their own anxieties surrounding world events right now. When I translated my anxieties into lyrics, I found a way to articulate and process my thoughts, which provided mental and emotional clarity, and my audience [thus far] have felt that same connection.

Songwriting allowed me to step back from my worries and see them in a new light. The process of creating something tangible out of my stressors made them feel more manageable. This shift not only gave me a sense of relief but also enabled me to handle other aspects of my life with renewed focus and calm.

Connecting Through Music

Music has the incredible ability to bring people together. It helps us de-stress by creating a shared experience, fostering connections, and building a sense of community. This collective energy is powerful in combating the isolation and loneliness that often accompany anxiety.

Oh! And before I forget, here's HARMONY in case you haven't yet heard it yet... does it help you to de stress listening to it?

Practical Tips for Using Music to Manage Stress

  1. Breathe: Incorporate deep breathing exercises into your singing practice to promote relaxation and reduce stress.
  2. De-Stress: Use music - either listening, singing, or writing it - as a tool to lower cortisol levels and boost serotonin and dopamine, improving your mood and overall health.
  3. Relax: Allow yourself to unwind by listening to the melodies and lyrics of your favorite songs.
  4. Life: Remember that life is like an album, each experience [however positive or negative] is simply a song in your album. Each lyric is an opportunity to express and process your emotions.
  5. Practice: Regularly engage with music, whether through listening, writing, or performing, to maintain a healthy mental and emotional state.
  6. Energy: Harness the positive energy that music brings to combat stress and anxiety.
  7. Health: Recognize the health benefits of music, from reducing blood pressure to enhancing mental clarity.

So... what?

Writing "Harmony" reminded me of the power of prayer and hope resulting in self-actualized solutions when it comes to dealing with stressors. Music helps us breathe easier, de-stress, and relax, allowing us to face life's challenges with a clear mind and positive outlook. By embracing songwriting, we can transform our anxieties into something beautiful and uplifting that serve us both in the moment, and - believe it or not - in our futures too.
