The Real MVPs: Why You Need a Whole Team for Your Mental Health (and Creative) Growth

They say it takes a village — but I’d argue it takes a team.

On a recent coaching call, someone shared a brilliant metaphor that stuck with me: in life, we all need a quarterback, linebackers, coaches, cheerleaders, and maybe even a beer guy every once in a while. Now, I'm not a football kinda woman [I grew up in New Zealand, where the national sport is rugby], but it hit me hard because as a singer-songwriter and empowerment coach, I see this metaphor play out in the lives of my clients all the time — especially teenagers, artists, and high achievers navigating stress, pressure, and big life transitions.

Whether you’re raising teenagers, running a business, teaching students, or simply trying to develop new skills and mindsets to navigate life more effectively, this kind of support system isn’t optional — it’s essential.

So what does that team actually look like?

1. The Quarterback (You) – Leading With Purpose

Your quarterback is your growth mindset in action. It’s the part of you that takes initiative, makes bold moves, and sees failure not as the end, but as valuable feedback. A quarterback doesn’t just memorize the playbook — they study it, question it, and adapt it to meet the needs of the moment. That’s the difference between someone operating from a fixed mindset — believing their skills and intelligence are fixed traits — versus someone with a growth mindset, who knows that mistakes are simply stepping stones to progress.

In life, just like in music, we have to take the lead on our own personal development. That means making the conscious choice to develop new ideas, practice, and persist when things get hard. It’s about shifting from “I can’t” to “I haven’t… yet.”

In my empowerment through songwriting coaching, I’ve watched this mindset come to life. When my clients sit down to write, they’re not just putting words on paper [though they might think they are, at first] — they’re taking ownership of their narrative. They’re stepping into the driver’s seat (or onto the field, if we’re sticking with the football metaphor), and calling the plays that shape their future. Whether they’re writing about anxiety, emotional challenges, or pressure to succeed, that act of songwriting becomes a powerful strategy for claiming their self-expression, navigating challenges, and making meaningful progress. It’s an active, creative process that rewires how they see themselves—not as stuck, but as in motion.

Because in the game of life, you are the quarterback. The decision maker. the game-changer. And every word you write, every decision you make, every risk you take—that’s you moving the ball forward.

2. The Coaches – Strategy and Perspective

Coaches offer feedback, constructive criticism, and new strategies—not to tear you down, but to help you grow.

The right coach doesn’t just correct your technique—they challenge your mindset, help you reframe your thoughts, and support you in seeing possibilities where you once saw only limitations.

In my empowerment through songwriting coaching, I guide both teens and adults through creative practices like singing, songwriting, and somatic breathwork—not just to improve their vocal skills, but to rewrite their internal narrative. Because here’s the truth: the way we talk to ourselves matters. And often, the stories we tell ourselves—about our worth, our capabilities, our future—are based on outdated scripts written by fear, comparison, or past experiences.

Songwriting gives us a powerful way to challenge those scripts.

It allows us to name our thoughts, explore our emotional patterns, and then reshape them into something more truthful, hopeful, and empowering. This is cognitive reframing in action—taking a limiting belief and transforming it into a line of lyrics that tells a different story: one of strength, possibility, and growth.

For example, a teenager who feels unseen or unheard might begin writing a song about feeling invisible—but with the right coaching, that song becomes an anthem of self-connection, inner strength, and belonging. With the right guidance, they move from focusing on what’s wrong to discovering what’s resilient and rising within them.

That’s what coaching is for: to gently push you beyond your comfort zone, offer new strategies and perspectives, and help you develop the tools to face challenges with clarity and confidence. Whether it's helping someone reshape their inner dialogue or encouraging them to find their power in a melody, this work is about building a mindset—and a life—rooted in growth, self-expression, and transformation.

3. The Linebackers – Protection and Boundaries

These are the people who stand between you and your obstacles. They’re the ones helping you develop boundaries, identify harmful patterns, and keep negativity at bay—whether that’s toxic people, fixed mindsets, or even the slow creep of burnout. These roles matter in every area of life—but in creative spaces, and especially in the music industry, this kind of protection is essential.

Why? Because when you're creating from a place of truth—writing songs that explore trauma, grief, identity, or self-doubt—you’re exposing your heart. And vulnerability without support can feel like standing on a stage with no mic and no one in the audience.

That’s why the right support network can be the difference between a young person floundering in self-doubt… or finding their voice.

One of my earliest empowerment through songwriting clients, Sydney Witt, didn’t just have me on her team when she was first discovering her voice as a songwriter—she had my entire network rallying behind her. From her incredibly supportive mother to producers, videographers, photographers, and additional mentors—we created a safety net of encouragement, guidance, and real-world tools that allowed her to not only grow musically, but personally.

Sydney's journey reminded me that it takes a village—especially when you're helping a young person navigate their emotions, their creative identity, and the industry at the same time.

In my coaching, I don’t just teach songwriting—I build ecosystems of support. We don’t just write lyrics—we build resilience. I help youth (and adults, too) develop the internal tools to stay grounded, emotionally safe, and strategic as they explore and express their truths through music.

Because real empowerment doesn’t happen in isolation—it happens in community. And when we surround a young person with people who believe in them, challenge them, and protect their spark… that’s when they truly begin to shine.

4. The Cheerleaders – Encouragement and Belief

We all need people in our lives who cheer us on—not just when we’re shining, but especially when we’re struggling. People who encourage us when we fail, who celebrate the small wins we might’ve overlooked, and who remind us of our potential on the days we’re not quite sure it’s there.

These are the people who model a growth mindset—who show us that success isn’t some magical result of fixed traits or innate talent. It’s the result of effort, consistency, curiosity, and the willingness to show up again, even after you fall.

They’re the friends, mentors, teachers, and coaches who believe in us until we can believe in ourselves.

When I work with a client—whether a high-achieving teen feeling the weight of perfectionism, or an adult rediscovering their voice after years of self-doubt—I’m not just listening to their songs. I’m listening for the story underneath. And then I reflect back what they can’t always see yet: their progress, their courage, their resilience.

In music, like in life, practice makes progress—not perfection. That’s the mantra we live by in my coaching. Each note, each lyric, each breath taken with intention is a step forward.

And when someone is in your corner saying, “Keep going. That was brave. You’re getting better. I see you.”—it changes everything.

This is how we build resilience. This is how we grow.

It’s not just about reaching a destination. It’s about building a mindset that believes, even through failure, that you’re not done yet. And that’s the magic I try to offer every client I work with—because I’ve needed that magic myself.

5. The Beer Guy – Joy and Release

No, not necessarily alcohol. I’m talking about that friend or activity that reminds you to lighten up. The one who helps you decompress, have fun, and reset. For me? It’s songwriting. It’s taking a break from overthinking and dropping into creativity. Music has that unique ability to shift our mood, raise our energy levels, and help us feel connected to ourselves and others again.

The Growth Mindset Connection

All of this speaks to one fundamental truth: success and personal growth don’t happen in isolation. We need people, feedback, and belief systems that reinforce our capacity to change.

A fixed mindset says “this is just who I am.” A growth mindset says, “this is just the starting point.”

In my work as a vocal and songwriting coach, I see young people and adults break through years of self-doubt, anxiety, and trauma when they shift their attitudes and learn to express themselves creatively. Whether it's a high school senior applying to college or a business executive looking for more purpose, songwriting becomes a mirror, helping them reflect, adjust, and grow.

Final Thought: Who’s on Your Team?

Whether you're building a business, navigating a hard season, parenting a teen, or just trying to understand yourself better… you weren’t meant to do it alone.

And if you don’t know where to start? I’d love to be your coach.

I offer empowerment through songwriting and singing coaching for both young people and adults who want to shift their mindset, build their confidence, and communicate with more clarity and purpose. Together, we’ll use music to help you find your voice, unlock your inner strength, and build the team you need to thrive.

Let’s get you unstuck, and moving forward with purpose.
