The Power of Words – How the Things We Say Shape Our Reality

Words are not just a means of communication—they are a force, a powerful tool that can shape the reality we live in. Think about it: when you speak, you’re not just sharing information; you’re creating energy, setting intentions, and influencing the world around you. The words we say, both to others and to ourselves, have the power to build, break, heal, or hurt. They have the ability to create clarity or chaos, depending on the intention behind them.

But what if we realized that the words we choose—whether positive or negative—are shaping our life experience every single day?

The Power of Words in Shaping Reality

If you’ve ever heard someone say, “That person is so kind,” what do they actually mean? They’re not talking about the person’s actions; they’re referencing the kindness of their words. You can be a kind person only if you speak kind words. When we use language with intention, we are communicating more than just thoughts—we’re transmitting energy.

But it’s much deeper than simply the way we interact with one another. It starts with self.

Consider how you talk to yourself. Your internal dialogue is a reflection of your beliefs, and that inner monologue has a profound impact on your emotions, mindset, and even physical well-being. When you constantly tell yourself you’re not good enough, you’re reinforcing limiting beliefs that affect everything from your confidence to your success. Conversely, when you choose empowering words, you start shifting your perspective, creating a more positive outlook on life.

In my journey as a singer-songwriter and empowerment coach, I’ve come to learn how transformative the act of songwriting can be. The words we sing or write in a song are not just lyrics; they are declarations of who we are, what we’ve been through, and who we’re becoming. Sia’s “Titanium” and Keala Settle’s “This is Me” are two clear examples of how the power of words can fuel resilience and hope, but today: I want to make this a little more personal. Because those are someone else’s words and experiences.

Instead, I want to discuss the power behind the words of two of my original songs “Living Proof” and “Be Brave” – recognizing that you, too, have a song within you that’s just waiting to come out.

Who knows? Maybe this will inspire you to start on that journey. Ready? Let’s go.

Living Proof: A Testimony of Transformation

In “Living Proof”, I sing, “NO MATTER WHAT HELL COMES MY WAY, I’LL BE LAUGHING EVERY STEP I TAKE… I’M LIVING PROOF THAT LOVE WINS.” These lyrics aren’t just words on paper. They represent a mindset — a declaration that no matter the challenges I’ve faced, love and resilience will always triumph. When I wrote these lyrics, I wasn’t just reflecting on my past — it turns out I was shaping my future. In fact, I was manifesting the strength I needed to keep moving forward.

Which is just as well, because I wrote this song on New Years Eve of 2019 going into 2020, and – well – we all know what that year brought with it. But that’s how powerful words can be when it comes to manifesting the resilience we absolutely needed to make it through the trauma of a pandemic, the social injustice and every other trauma we faced in 2020.

But I digress.

The power of words doesn’t stop at just verbal communication; when I speak to myself through song, I’m reinforcing my worth and my capacity for healing. When you choose words that affirm your strength, your abilities, and your worth, you start living them out in real life. The words you say, to yourself and to others, create a ripple effect. They shape your reality, your relationships, and how you show up in the world.

Be Brave: Embracing Growth Through Empowering Language

Another song, “Be Brave”, beautifully highlights the journey of overcoming fear and embracing growth. The lyrics, “Even the strongest sometimes fall, It’s okay, you can’t win them all, Even the strongest have their days, Just be brave,” encourage anyone facing obstacles to trust that setbacks don’t define them. In fact, every challenge is an opportunity to rise, to grow, and to be brave.

I’ve almost started looking at songwriting as a self-directed form of hypnosis. After a while, you can’t help but start to believe yourself.

When you say these words to yourself, you start to internalize that message. The power of language shifts your perspective from victimhood to empowerment. You begin to trust yourself more. You start to embrace the idea that falling down is not failing; it’s simply a part of the process. Just as I encourage my students to express their struggles through songwriting, I know that it’s through those raw, honest lyrics that we learn to heal, grow, and become our best selves.

The Power of Words in Communication: Learning to Speak with Intention

Whether it’s in songwriting, coaching, or everyday life, the power of words to communicate with clarity and intention is essential. As I’ve learned from listening to experts like Mel Robbins, Jim Rohn and Jefferson Fisher, the words we choose in conversations determine how others experience us. Fisher says, “What you say is who you are.”

This couldn’t be truer, especially for teens and young adults who are developing their communication skills. But I want to take it a little bit further, because the words they use to express themselves — not just to others, but to themselves — are critical in shaping their identity. We need to teach the next generation how to communicate authentically, without fear, and with purpose. I believe the transformative power of songwriting is one of the best ways to help young people find their voice and express themselves with confidence. Through songwriting, they learn that their words matter. Their voice matters.

Your voice matters.

How Language Affects Our Mental Health and Stress Levels

Words aren’t just motivational or reflective—they also impact our mental health and well-being. Negative language, like constantly criticizing ourselves or others, can fuel anxiety and depression. On the flip side, positive words can act as a balm for our nervous system, reducing stress and helping us feel grounded.

When we speak words of kindness, whether to others or ourselves, we are engaging in self-care. Words of affirmation, like those found in empowering songs, have the potential to lift us out of dark places and give us the clarity to make decisions that align with our true self. Every song I write is an attempt to give myself and others a chance to heal through the words we speak.

Of course, when we partner those words with music and song [and the breathing techniques associated with singing]: well, the magic of music just increases when it comes to mitigating our stress levels, and managing our mental health.

The Connection Between Words and the Brain: A Somatic Approach

As a somatic healer and vocal coach, I understand the power of connecting mind, body, and voice. Words, especially when spoken or sung with intention, have a profound effect on our brain chemistry. Positive language releases feel-good hormones like dopamine and serotonin, while negative language can trigger the stress hormone cortisol.

In my work with teens, I teach them how to use their voice and their words as a tool to manage anxiety, stress, and emotional overwhelm. Singing and songwriting are not just creative outlets; they are a form of somatic healing. The act of vocalizing positive affirmations or lyrics can physically change the way we feel, calming the nervous system and helping us regain control over our emotions.

Words as a Tool for Manifestation and Healing

Words are a form of energy. They can create or destroy, heal or hurt. Whether you’re using your words to set an intention for the future or to reflect on past experiences, remember that what you say has the power to shape your reality. As you communicate with others, whether through conversations or in your songwriting, do so with purpose and love. Your words are your legacy. They are a powerful tool for manifesting the life you desire.

So, what will your words create today? Will they build, heal, and inspire? Or will they limit, destroy, and hold you back? The choice is yours. And remember—you are living proof that love wins.

If you’re ready to use the power of words to transform your life, let’s connect. Whether it’s through songwriting, stress management coaching, or vocal empowerment, together we can harness the power of language to create the reality you desire.
