Life is full of lessons. Some are loud, some are quiet. Some hit us in the face like a brick, while others sneak up on us, softly, like a whisper in the wind. And I’ll tell you right now—whether you’re in the music biz, building your empire, or just trying to live a good life, these lessons are universal. Some of the most valuable lessons I’ve learned as a musician, coach, and musicpreneur haven’t just shaped my career, they’ve shaped who I am as a person. And today, I’d like to share them with you.
1. Stop Comparing Your Reality to Someone Else’s Highlight Reel
I’ve been there. You’re scrolling through social media, looking at someone’s highlight reel, and feeling like your real, authentic, messy life just doesn’t measure up. But here’s the thing: comparing your behind-the-scenes to someone else’s edited, filtered version of themselves is like comparing apples to a Hollywood red carpet. We all have our struggles—our fears, our doubts, our raw, unfiltered realities. But the trick is: your journey is YOURS. And it’s beautiful exactly as it is. So stop comparing your real to someone else’s perfect, and start embracing the wild and unpredictable journey you’re on.
It’s yours to own.
2. Knowing Something ≠ Knowing How to Apply It
Knowledge is power, but it’s only power if you use it. This is something I’ve learned the hard way over the years, especially in my work with youth. Yes, you can know how to write a song, but the magic happens when you actually sit down, pour your heart out, and create. It’s not just about knowing the theory—it’s about putting it into action. Whether it’s music, business, or relationships, knowing something is just the beginning. The true power lies in how you use that knowledge to shape your world.
3. Managing Is About What We Do; Leading Is About Who We Are
Management is all about tasks, lists, and getting stuff done. But leadership? That’s about who you are. It’s about how you show up, the energy you bring, and the way you inspire those around you. Leadership isn’t about titles; it’s about integrity, authenticity, and making choices that align with your core values. And I’ll tell you this right now—if you’re going to lead, whether it’s a team, a community, or your own life, you’ve got to be the change you want to see. It’s in your actions, your vibe, and your voice.
4. Every Choice You Make Has a Ripple Effect
Every decision you make, from the smallest to the largest, has the potential to change the world—starting with you. Your actions create a ripple effect that influences everything and everyone around you. Think about it: choosing to live with purpose, make bold moves, or speak your truth—it all has consequences, for better or worse. So make sure the choices you’re making are the ones that align with your values, and let those ripples of positivity and change spread out into the world.
5. Pick Your Own Kind of Hard—There’s No Easy Path
Life doesn’t come with an easy button. And the sooner you realize that, the sooner you can start owning your own hard. You know what I mean? Whether you’re in the music biz, chasing a dream, or fighting for justice, you’re going to have to face challenges. The trick isn’t avoiding them; it’s picking the kind of hard that matters to you. The hard that’s worth it. Choose your struggle wisely, because the alternative is struggling in a way that doesn’t move you forward.
6. Knowing When to Pause Is Just as Critical as Knowing When to Push
Balance, baby. It’s all about balance. I’ve learned this lesson the hard way—especially in my life as a coach, artist, wife, and entrepreneur. Pushing yourself non-stop can lead to burnout, and we all know that burnout doesn’t serve anyone. But knowing when to pause, rest, and recharge is just as important as knowing when to hit the gas pedal and push forward. Rest isn’t weakness—it’s strategy. So take time to breathe, reflect, and reset so you can come back stronger than ever.
7. What Someone Says Is Never the Full Picture
Words are powerful. But what someone says is never the whole story. Whether it’s in relationships, activism, or business, we have to dig deeper than the surface. People’s words are just one layer, but real understanding comes when you read between the lines and listen to what’s not being said. This is something I’ve had to learn through my work in the music industry and in coaching. When someone speaks, listen to the energy, the context, and the feeling behind their words, because that’s where the truth often lies.
8. Growth Lives in the Discomfort of Being a Beginner
Let’s be real: nobody likes to feel like a beginner. But guess what? That’s where the magic happens. Growth doesn’t live in your comfort zone—it lives in the discomfort of trying something new, facing your fears, and pushing through the growing pains. Whether it’s starting a new project, learning a new skill, or releasing that first song, the discomfort is a sign you’re moving forward. Lean into it, because that’s where you’ll find your growth.
9. What You Avoid Is Just as Impactful as What You Do
Avoiding things doesn’t make them go away. In fact, it just makes them bigger. Whether it’s avoiding hard conversations, difficult decisions, or the inner work, ignoring things only delays the inevitable. The sooner you face the uncomfortable stuff head-on, the sooner you’ll be able to move through it and on to better things. It’s like cleaning out a closet—you can keep shoving things in there, but eventually, you’ve got to deal with it. So why not tackle it now, and save yourself the trouble later?
10. It’s Okay to Fail—Just Make Sure You Fail Forward
Failure isn’t the end, it’s the beginning of something better. When we fail, we often think it’s a sign that we’re not meant for greatness, but actually, failure is the perfect opportunity to learn and grow. The key is not to stay stuck in the failure but to use it as a stepping stone to reach new heights. As I’ve learned through my career, failure can fuel the fire of success if you choose to fail forward. Whether it’s a song that didn’t hit the mark or a business move that didn’t go as planned, every misstep is a lesson in the making. Just keep moving forward, because the world doesn’t need perfection—it needs your progress.
11. Your Vibe Attracts Your Tribe
Have you ever noticed how the people you’re surrounded by often reflect your energy? That’s because your vibe truly attracts your tribe. The people in your life are a reflection of the energy you put out into the world. If you’re putting out positivity, joy, and authenticity, you’ll attract those who vibe with that energy. This is one of the reasons I’m so passionate about surrounding myself with amazing people who uplift me and challenge me to be better. So, don’t settle for anything less than the tribe that will lift you up, challenge you, and support you as you rise.
12. The Only Way Out Is Through
Whether it’s dealing with a tough time in your personal life, the hurdles of the music industry, or overcoming self-doubt, the only way out of a tough situation is through it. This means facing your fears head-on, doing the work, and not running from the hard stuff. It’s in the process of moving through adversity that we find our true strength and resilience. Trust me, I know this firsthand—from brain surgeries to being vulnerable with my audience, the toughest challenges have led to the greatest personal growth.
And let’s be real, avoiding the pain doesn’t make it go away—it just keeps it lingering. You’re capable of facing whatever comes your way, and once you realize that, you’ll come out even stronger. The power is in how you face it.
13. You Are the Author of Your Own Story
One of the most powerful realizations I’ve had is that you are the author of your own story. It’s easy to feel like life is happening to you, but in reality, you have the pen in your hand. Your story isn’t written by circumstances, other people’s expectations, or the pressures of society. It’s yours to create, edit, and rewrite as you go. So take control of your narrative—if you don’t like where it’s heading, grab that pen and start writing a new chapter. This is especially true in the creative world; whether you’re writing a song, launching a business, or crafting your future, it’s all in your hands.
14. Don’t Be Afraid to Let Go
One of the hardest things to do in life is let go—whether it’s of a relationship, a job, or even a version of yourself. But let me tell you this: when you let go of what no longer serves you, you make room for something better. Sometimes holding on to things (even things that feel comfortable) holds us back from stepping into our full potential. I’ve had to let go of old limiting beliefs, toxic relationships, and even parts of my own identity that weren’t aligned with who I am now. The freedom you’ll experience when you let go and allow yourself to grow is priceless.
15. You Have Everything You Need Inside You
I say this to my clients and I say it to myself every day: You have everything you need inside you. Whether it’s strength, resilience, creativity, or love, it’s already there, waiting for you to tap into it. Life, music, and everything in between can feel overwhelming at times, but trust me, you have everything inside you to get through it. It’s just a matter of digging deep and trusting your intuition. When you embrace your own power, you unlock doors you never even knew were there.
