If "just being yourself" was so easy, why do so many of us struggle with it?

We’re conditioned to believe that who we are isn’t enough. We’re taught to shrink, edit, and mold ourselves into something we think will be more acceptable to others, whether it’s in our careers, relationships, or even our creative endeavors. Whether you're male, female, or somewhere in between; this can affect everything from the roles we play in our families through to our positions in the office, our body image and whether or not we feel brave enough to voice our ideas and opinions.

But what happens when we finally stop trying to fit into someone else's version of success and just own who we are?

The truth is, authenticity is one of the most powerful forces in the world, and when we live with integrity, we can unlock our truest potential and make the kind of impact that will create lasting change.

But what exactly does it mean to live authentically, and how does integrity play a role in all of it?

At its core, personal integrity means acting consistently with your moral principles and moral values. It’s about living a life that aligns with your deepest truths, even when no one is watching. In my work as a coach and a singer/songwriter, I’ve seen countless individuals — especially teenagers — struggle to find their true voice because they’re caught up in the pressures of external expectations. They feel like they have to sound like someone else, write like someone else, or be someone else. But the moment they embrace their own story, their own voice, and their own truth, they unlock something deeper. That’s when the magic happens. That’s when they experience growth, connection, and real impact.

Integrity involves a commitment to living according to your principles. For me, songwriting has become a practice of integrity. It’s an artistic expression rooted in my personal moral life, and every song I create reflects my beliefs and my character. Artistic integrity is about staying true to your voice and your message, even when the industry pressures you to conform to certain standards or norms.

This is where practical wisdom comes in. When we apply wisdom to our actions and decisions, we align ourselves with moral philosophy and make choices that are grounded in our values. So, when it comes to leadership, whether it's in our own lives or within a community, ethical leadership becomes crucial. We must act consistently with our values, knowing that our actions have the power to inspire and shape the world around us.

When we look at political integrity or even managerial integrity, we see the importance of making decisions not for personal gain, but for the collective good. It's about having a clear moral purpose and sticking to it even when faced with challenges. We all have the ability to influence others, and our character traits—whether it's our honesty, openness, or dedication to doing the right thing—are the building blocks of that influence.

Whether you're a musician, a coach, or an activist, your core commitments—your values and beliefs—should guide your decisions. These commitments will shape the legacy you leave behind, and will determine whether you inspire change or just go through the motions. Integrity leads to trust, which is the foundation of every meaningful relationship, whether in business, in personal life, or through the music we create.

Integrity in the Face of Discomfort

When I talk to my clients, especially youth, I often say: "growth lives in the discomfort of being a beginner." It’s in those moments of vulnerability, where you step outside of your comfort zone, that your integrity is truly tested. Whether you’re pursuing your dreams or making hard decisions, it’s easy to take shortcuts or go along with the crowd. But it’s when you act with integrity—even when it’s hard—that you start to build the character traits that will serve you throughout your journey.

The hardest thing about growth is embracing discomfort, but that’s where real change happens. And you’ll find that the moments of discomfort are the ones that shape who you truly are. Just like the moral philosophy I teach in my coaching, staying true to your core beliefs—no matter the circumstances—will make you a stronger, more resilient individual in the long run.

So what's the role that integrity has to play when it comes to music - and especially - music and songwriting?

Integrity in music and songwriting is about staying true to your authentic self, your values, and your purpose. It’s not just about writing the perfect song—it’s about expressing your truth through your lyrics, melodies, and the stories you tell. Integrity in music means embracing who you are and not trying to conform to someone else’s expectations or industry standards.

It’s about creating from the heart, rather than chasing trends or trying to sound like someone else. For me, songwriting became a practice of integrity when I stopped worrying about fitting into the industry's expectations and just wrote from my soul. That’s when everything changed. Integrity is the foundation of creating music that not only connects with others but also reflects your true self.
